Your computer is slow, broken, or just feeling old. Should you repair it or buy a new one? After repairing thousands of computers in South Jersey, here's our honest 2026 cost-benefit framework.
1 The 50% Rule
Our simplest rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of a comparable replacement, replace it.
Examples:
- 5-year-old laptop with a costly screen replacement when a new comparable laptop costs about the same โ replace.
- 3-year-old laptop where battery replacement is a fraction of new laptop cost โ repair.
- 7-year-old desktop where motherboard repair is well under half of new PC cost โ repair (motherboard often only thing to fail).
2 When Repair ALWAYS Wins
- Battery replacement on a 2-4 year old laptop: A relatively small investment buys you 2-3 more years of life โ much less than a new laptop.
- SSD upgrade for a slow computer: installation. Makes a 7-year-old computer feel like new.
- RAM upgrade (if upgradeable): Inexpensive upgrade that often doubles your computer's usable life.
- Virus / malware removal: Far cheaper than replacing.
- Operating system reinstall: Fixes 70% of "computer is slow" complaints.
3 When Replacement ALWAYS Wins
- 10+ year-old computer with multiple issues: hardware is at end of life regardless.
- Major liquid damage to a laptop: motherboard cleaning + replacement often exceeds 70% of new cost.
- Laptop with broken hinge AND old battery AND slow performance: three issues = three repair bills = replacement is cheaper.
- Windows 10 computer that can't run Windows 11: Microsoft drops Windows 10 support in October 2025. Old hardware = security risk.
4 The Hidden Cost of New: Setup Time
Most people forget the cost of SETTING UP a new computer:
- Transferring 50GB of documents, photos, music takes hours
- Reinstalling 20+ applications takes most of a day
- Reconfiguring email, bookmarks, passwords takes hours more
- Learning a new OS version or hardware quirks takes weeks of small frustrations
Factoring in your time, that's a substantial hidden cost when buying a new computer.
We offer full data migration to a new computer (which avoids most of this).
5 The Honest Truth About Computer Lifespan
From our shop's experience, here's how long computers typically last:
- Cheap laptop: 3-5 years before major repair needed
- Mid-range laptop: 5-7 years with proper care
- Premium laptop: 7-10 years possible
- Mid-range desktop: 7-10 years with upgrades
- Premium gaming desktop: 10+ years
Repairs can ADD years to these timelines, but only if the underlying hardware isn't fundamentally limited.
6 Should You Wait for Holiday Sales?
If you're going to buy new, Black Friday and back-to-school sales (August) typically offer 15-25% off mainstream computers.
BUT โ if your current computer is broken and you need it for work, school, or essential daily use, paying full price now is often cheaper than the productivity loss of waiting 3 months.
